Hotel Rwanda

I just watched this movie. Ya, I know it's been out like eons ago. But back then i was a busy student, so now since I've got the time, I've decided to catch up on it. For those who havene't watch it. It's worth it to have a look.

I watched it over at Huiqin's place while she was studying for her test which she should be taking about now. I had to watch there as my computer fell sick after catching some viruses. Now Norton's to the rescue...

Back to the movie, it's about a hotel manager who rose up to the occasion when Rwanda had a civil war back in 1994. He was a hotel manager and all his life he has been building up relationships with the who's who of the upper class. However, when the clashes broke out, the white men left him and he has to defend himself. His priority was initially only his family but after a while, he finds himself protecting not only his family, but also his neighbours and even the "guests" of the hotel. The "guests" were actualy people who came to seek refuge at his hotel. Not only that, he still has to be able to manage the 100 over staff in the hotel. Throughout the show, he has had many near death experiences and was even held at gun point. However, everytime, he'll be resourceful enough to come up with a plan or to find a contact or a bribe that can help him.

However, the most touching part of the show was the rain scene when the journalists were all leaving for the airport and were to be evacuated. They felt so ashamed that they cannot stop this calamity but had to leave like cowards. But as they were leaving for the coaches, one of the hotel staff - being black- still took the umbrella and sheltered them from the rain. Then one white journalist said "Oh no please.."

Throughout the show, it really shows that racism will lead from one problem to another. The civil war was a result of racism. This show also showed the development of the main lead's character. I like the last line of the movie when he said that "There is always room." Indeed there is. There is always room in the hearts of people and literally always room on the bus that they were boarding. His experience in the hotel will teach him how to find room when there is no more room.

I'll give the show a 4.8 out of 5.0.

Dinner @ Lawry's

Last night, was at 2nd floor Paragon and went to Lawry's for dinner.
We were served the famous "spinning bowl salad" and the bowl was really spinning!!!

The lady with the funny headgear "spin" this out for us:

@Lawry's, you'll be served by the cast who just walked out of the "Maid in Manhattan" set:

This is their Maryland Seafood:

The push cart from the streets of Pattaya was also here after the police raid in Pattaya:

This was the final product (Lawry's cut medium well):

In conclusion, there's nothing spectecular about this place. The ambience is nothing to shout about but it was "certainly" unique. Food wise, you can get something better for that price. A set was about SGD60-SGD100.. Service wise, can see that the staff are trying to speak with an accent. At least for some of them.

All in all, i give a rating of 7.2/10.

Will I return again? Probably not.

Kenneth takes on SAF's 2 recent cases of death of serviceman

Recently, 2 servicemen in the SAF died within a week and both died during training. As I read the news, I feel really sorry for them especially their family members. The 2 boys were punished for a crime they did not commit. They were innocent...

If you think that I am going to slam the SAF for these 2 cases of death here, well, actually not. Perhaps after the first case of the death of the recuit, I do feel that ah, SAF made a mistake again and thus, 1 man is down.. But after the second case whereby the OCT (now 2LT) died during training in Brunei, I know that SAF has done what it can do. U see, the OCT was a pilot trainee and being able to go to Brunei for training, it means that he is not new to the training style of the SAF. He is already not a civilian so to speak. Personally having gone through the pilot selection process of the RSAF, I know that they have checked all that needs to be checked to ensure that the pilots are all medically fit. The checks include ECG, blood pressure, cholesterol level, heart murmuring, hole in heart, BMI, and the list goes on.... If that personnel was able to pass all of these tests, then it should be really ok, or at least, medically, nothing wrong could be found.

The medical world is a ever evolving or ever changing one. In the past, who sould have heard of Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD)? Today, it is the main concern of most parents if not, of most day care centres. In the past, polio is a scary illness, today, it can be easily be prevented by vaccine. There are lots of stuff out there that is still waiting to be discovered that perhaps modern day medical procedures are unable to spot.

I do not know what the 3 day stoppage of all physical activities throughout SAF have brought about, but it sure brought cheers to many servicemen esp recruits.

So how to prevent such deaths from ever happening again. I think most pre-enlistees should be aware that 1 main guiding rule applies in the SAF. That is: If you don't take care of yourself, noone else will. Sometimes you maybe deemed as "chao keng". Well then, so be it. If your conscious is clear then it's ok. Why be bothered by what people say and push yourself over the line? You know your body best. Having said this, if you are unwilling to push yourself, you will never improve and your time in NS will be a total waste. I pushed myself to get IPPT silver but not IPPT gold. I know my body and I know what I can take. If you think that I am using this opportinity to hao lian that I got IPPT Silver before, YOU ARE RIGHT. If you think that I need to boost my own ego cos I cannot achieve IPPT Silver already, YOU ARE RIGHT AGAIN.

Moving along, the next point is that you've got to be very alert and sharp. Cantonese saying: "seng mok". Personal experience that I once had during my NS was that I went to see the doctor for fever and at the same time, I told him of a sprain that I have. So he gave me some medicine for my cold and also a all famous "rub-on". When the medic gave me that medicine, he saw the cold tablets and he assumed that the other bottle was cough syrup. (cos cough and cold always go together) then he said "these tablets for your fever and cold, 3 times a day. This syrup 3 times a day also." Good thing I know how to read and I checked that it was no cough syrup. In fact, on the bottle of the "rub-on" it states, not to be taken orally. What to say??? They are all but NSFs. I was a man in the army and so I understand the "man"tality. Just get a job done and go back to sleep. That medic popped a few more lozenges and then closed the window and got back to sleep... That is NS.

Photos from BKK Trip

With these crazy people, you'll know that the next few dayz will be total madness... Indeed they were...

Me onboard the A-319..

At BKK, we had to come off the plane onto the tarmac and then the bus will pick us up. What to do? Budget mah.. And the bus was super duper cold. We felt like we were fresh pork going to the market..

Ok, this is our attempt to walk from Jontiem beach to Pattaya beach... it's a very very long walk.

Any sweat? No sweat chicken feet Haha all the way!

On the boat to the spot where we did Para-sailing.

We went for the SPA. Super Shiok but a little expensive, costs us 4700Baht which is about SGD200.

After a 2-hour wait, her nails were finally ready.

Qin loves mango so we were recommended to Mango Tango by her ex-manager. Indeed they were shiok...

Some road side food we ate...

Back from BKK

Ok, I"m back from Bangkok. Left last wed evening on Air-Asia's A319. It costs only 99cen and the flight was still only half filled. Upon reaching Bangkok we went straight for Pattaya and we reached the hotel at about 1plus 2 am. We settled down and rested for the night.

The next day was a very xiong route march from Jontiem beach to Pattaya beach. well, It's my fault for suggesting it but it really looked close on the map. Ha. So in the end, we had lunch, did some water sports and then went for the thai massage. Dinner was some seafood by the beach but sad to say, it's nothing wow lei.

For those who will ask the standard question "How was the trip?" Here's the standard answer "It was good."...

Then we spent more time at Pattaya the next morning before heading back to BKK. Over there, it was shopping, shopping and more shopping.

I'm keeping this post short as there's not much photos to display (blogspot dun like me) so dun wanna bore u. We went to Chatuchat-weekend flee market. Good experience. It's amazing to see such a place. I cannot imagine working there as a sales girl. Ha, super warm and stuffy. Bought lots of clothes and stuff. Rachel and Laimeng were really amazing shoppers. They can really walk non-stop whole day, many days. As long as there is a shop that sells shoes/handbags/earrings/belts/wallets/blouses/skirts.... they'll check it out. The first few days was still ok for me but by the 3rd day, my poor legs were crying out... I've had enough. haha. They were protesting for a break and my mind gave in. I decided that I'll go back to the hotel while the girls happily walk through the "all similar looking" shops. Qin then came to join me in the non-shopping itienary cos i think she also feel bad I'm all alone. In the end, we started setting meetng time and place and so Qin and I did our own things while Meng and rach carried on their quest for the best deals. I am more of a food person and spent more time eating and drinking. Meng and Rach are true blue shopping queens.

All guys listen, Never Ever go on a shopping trip with girls, you'll die a horrible death. Ha. I really take my hat off Rach and Meng, they can really buy and buy and buy and bargain and bargain and bargain. Amazing. Is it a DNA in all females???

Anyway, I'm back and at the airport, I received a sms. Seems like there's a major lapse in the CG admin. Just went to look into it and replied some e-mails. Ok, It's back to life and back to reality. I think you should really go check out Meng's and Rach's blog for the things they bought. They displayed all the items they bought and took a photo in the hotel room. I think the whole of Bangkok was there. I can safely say I spent the least amongst the 4 of us if you dun count the spa I went at healthland. HHA....

Oh ya, last thing, the airport has a service where by they can wrap up your luggage esp if you are carrying a backpack. You need not bring your own clig wrap and DIY. I was conned into doing it.. What a joke. = ).

P.S: The best buy I got was probably a gift for my beloved nephew. I will not reveal it here but hopefully I can take a picture of it soon and post it up. Ok, gtg now...

Oh ya, did I mention that Qin went for a 2-hour nail spa? and I waited for her there..... That's why I said never go on a trip with girls only. Ha.

Sports in SG

I watch the soccer match of Sg VS Uzbekistan with disgust. Ok, on a positive note, it was pretty hilarious as well. I have never seen people getting trashed until so jialat for a long long time. It was really entertaining. Well, if there's anything good about that match was the timing. It was played when there's no EPL and all that, so ppl have no choice but to watch that for some entertainment. Well, entertaining it sure was looking at how pathetic the lions were. Talking about the lions, I had initially thought that it was some United Nations. Let's see... numbers 14, 15, 16, 9, 6 are all Singaporeans???? WTH! I mean that's turly multi-racial or should I say "Uniquely Singapore" Haha.... Then you will ask where are the real Singaporeans then? Well, they are on the bench... HA HA HA. I'm serious!!!! Go check it out.

Ok, more hilarious stuff. Look at how Singapore's number 5 cleared the ball at the goal mouth. He practically set it up for the other player to score!!! Well done Team Singapore, just that the other player is from the oposition team. Haha. I think it would be better if he didn't touch the ball at all. That was really a classic.

One more thing, at the stadium, we see a sea of red. All the supporters of SG wore red. However, if you notice, you'll see many "AIG" ha, what does it tell you? All the Man U fans are there. Hahaa.

Before we move onto other things, I do hope you manage to catch this match of the century. It's a must watch. Look at how Uzbekistan scored the 5th goal. That made Lionel Luis [Our keeper-I think I spelt his name wrongly but who cares?? = )] looked silly [I really want to say much more but I think they will not be too nice]. Just listen to the comments from the commentator. The lions just can't wait to get to the locker. If you haven't watch the match, you might think that Uzbekistan is a strong team. I can assure you they are not. But they still manage to lead 5-2 during half time.

I think the Tiget Beer advert really speaks well here "You're either on top or who cares?"

That's the problem with Singapore's sports. Look at our table tennis team. It's practically Team China. The only Singaporean contribution that I saw in that match was when Singapore got the penalty. Good acting by that Singaporean and how did he manage to look so pathetic in front of the referee??? Ha, i think SG should still stick to acting and the media. Look at Eric Khoo at Festival de Cannes. Look at Jack Neo..

If I remember correctly, our minister Mr Teo Ser Luck did mention in the news before that the response for youth olympics is still very low and we're something like a thrid short of the target participation rate. Something like that. Well, with all the banners that states "We support SG's bid for youth olympics" that's wat it really means eh.

Ok, I heard on the radio last night that the management or someone strongly encourage Singaporeans to go down to support that soccer match. I was wondering if I should.

Well, there are some reason why we should really go:
1. Lions are pathetic, they need our support.
2. Sports in SG is dying.
3. It's entertinaing.

and the reason why we should not go are:
1. Lions are pathetic.
2. Sports in SG is dying.
3. It's cheap thrill.

Ok, I'll go watch the 2nd half now.. hahaha.......

somewhere at the 53rd minute, the commentator said "it's tortue for singapore but it's beautiful to watch.." ahha

Did someone say Singapore making to the World Cup in 2010? or is it 20100? = )

Well, I used to play rugby in my JC. After the school announce that students have to be present to support our school team and attendance will be marked at the match, I know that sports in SG still has a long long long long long long long long long long long way to go.....

85th Minute: Spectators start to leave the stadium.

Full time: SG lost 3-7

Then I asked myself one question: Why does SG still bother to keep the Lions team? Why not disband it? Why even have S-league? Isn't it a waste of money and resources? When I started reading more about soccer in SG, I know why. End of last year/January this year, Noh Alam Shah, one of the top players of Singapore's team was slapped with a 12 month long ban and S$2000 fine for disciplinary problem. This guy clearly has a problem trying to control himself and being disciplined.

Then the reason why SG is still keeping the team and having S-league now seems clearer. At least to me. Someone once said that Singapore is like a business, anything that does not make money will not last... i.e. anything that lasts has some sort of purpose or profit to it. Do you get it my dear reader?

2 more days to BKK

As the title says, 2 more days to Thailand. Well, I've been saying this for a long long time. I think ever since 2 months back. I'm going overseas. Well, many have gone and came back but I'm still here on this island. So this wed, I'm finally going off. Ok, going to plan what to buy. Got to come up with a shopping list... However, I dun think we'll buy really a lot as things there are not really super cheap. It is afterall, quite tourist infested.

For BBK, I'll just go and enjoy myself. Althought we have 7 days there but it seems like things will pass quite soon. With 2 days at Pattaya, it's 5 days in BBK. After all the planning, it seems like it's just nice.

Recently, I've been sleeping really early like about 10pm. I do not know why. Then I'll wake up at 4plus 5am, at times even at 2am... I have no idea what is happening. It's like some jet lag. Why???? I haven't been doing much but I just feel so tired. I think the spirit of "nua"ness is clinging onto me. I've got combat that....

NUS Life

Well, I tried to upload more photos which means I got more frustrated. Ok, my loyalty is really tested here. Live Journal seems to be hassle free. But NO, I will not do anything that will betray my conscience. So i'm staying on Blogger. Ha. At least for now...

Ok, this Friday was the 30th and I got back my results in the morning at 9am. Being the 4th year, I had the priviledge to receive them first as compared to the juniors. The lower your year, the later you'll get them. So when I sms to the NUS server, I got a reply. It states that the results are not out yet and please check your faculty timing. Ha, my home clock was fast. So, after a few minutes, I sent again. This time the reply came. I saw my matric number.

I knew that the sms contained my results for semester 8 - the final semester. I covered the HP screen and slowly moved down. I heard that this is very thrilling from my friends and I wanted to try it out myself. Indeed it was... I moved down and it was my matric number, followed by Semester 2 2007/2008. Then it was GEK1039 A+. Ha, that was understanding careers. Another Human Resource Module that got A. I think I should have majored in Human Resource Management. A huge thanks goes to Weiyan for editing my English for the paper. Thanks man. Then the following results were as follows:
ME4101A (FYP) A-
ME4105 (Specialization module) A
Me4231 (Aerodynamics and Propulsion) B+

So, in the end, I am very satisfied and happy with this semester's results. I calculated, with FYP being worth 2 modules as it is 8 MCs, the CAP for this sem is 4.6. This is the best semester I've had in NUS and it is the most unique one as I had only 1 written exam paper and this entire sem was very project intensive. Well, this boosted my CAP to 3.7 and that was how I ended my 'career' in NUS. 2nd lower. Not the best results but I'm satisfied as I had a really bad start back in Semester 1.

As posted before on my previous blog, I had a low 2.79 from the first semester. I thought to myself that if I can graduate with an honours, that'll be good already. At 2.79, I cannot qualify for any class of honours. I fought hard to have a comeback. Many of my friends told me that it gets harder as the semesters goes on. Some of them even "adviced" me to cut down on my church commitments. I was very discouraged but I always know in my heart that God will see me through it. There was once, at one of the lowest points, I heard God speaking as I was turning round to a lift lobby in NUS saying "I am with you in NUS." I was so excited and that really comforted me. From then, the results started to pick up. After 2.79, it was moved up to 3.13 (ave over 2 sems), 3.22(ave over 3 sems and so on..), 3.3, 3.41, 3.48, 3.57 and 3.7.

I was just thinking last semester if I will be able to breakthrough into the CAP 4 level and truly God is able to provide more than what we can ask or imagine. 4.6 on the CAP, the best results ever which saw my average going from 3.57 to 3.7, even bypassing the 3.6 area. God is simply amazing.

I know these are not super wow grades but I'm blogging this so that this can be a testimony that serves as an encouragement to any students especially those in NUS or going into NUS, that with God all things are possible. You can achieve your dreams if you do not give up. Keep praying and studying. Do not put your trust in horses and choriots but in the Almighty... Psalm 20:7
